Many of Barcelona's residential buildings were built before modern energy standards.

High energy bills add financial strain to homeowners.

Despite running the AC constantly, the home remains uncomfortably warm.

Thermal bridging causes significant heat gain, reducing energy efficiency.

Humidity leads to mold growth, further degrading indoor air quality.

A new law will restrict the sale, rental, or purchase of homes with an energy rating below E.
Overview
Problem
Barcelona's architectural legacy, marked by buildings predating modern energy standards, contributes significantly to the city's energy consumption and CO2 emissions. The project targets this issue by retrofitting these structures with second-skin facades, aiming to enhance environmental performance and reduce emissions through innovative architectural solutions
Solution
Our project introduces an innovative second-skin facade retrofitting solution for Barcelona's aging residential buildings, aiming to drastically reduce energy consumption and CO2 emissions. By leveraging advanced environmental analysis, our design optimizes insulation, ventilation, and shading, directly addressing the buildings envelopes’ inefficiencies. This approach not only enhances environmental performance but also significantly improves indoor comfort for occupants, aligning with sustainability goals and future-proofing the urban fabric against climate change.
